Historical information about the city of Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg is one of the youngest major cities in Germany. It is located in the federal state of Lower Saxony on the banks of the Aller River and is known worldwide as the birthplace of the legendary Volkswagen Beetle (Beetle) and the headquarters of the Volkswagen concern. Unlike most German cities with a long history, Wolfsburg was founded only in the XX century, but in a relatively short time it became one of the most important industrial, economic and technological centers of the country.

First settlements

Although the city appeared only in the XX century, the territory of modern Wolfsburg was inhabited long before its foundation. Archaeological finds indicate that people lived here in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Later on these lands there were small German settlements, whose inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, livestock, fishing and crafts.

In the Middle Ages, trade routes connecting northern and central Germany passed through this region. However, there were no large cities here - the area remained mainly agricultural.

Wolfsburg Castle

The history of the area is closely related to Schloss Wolfsburg Castle, which was first mentioned in documents in 1302. Initially, it was a fortified fortress belonging to the noble family of Bartensleben.

The castle occupied a strategic position and controlled important trade routes of the region. Over the course of several centuries, it was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, gradually turning the medieval fortress into a luxurious Renaissance palace.

After the suppression of the Bartensleben family in the XVI century, the castle passed into the possession of the counts von der Schulenburg, who belonged to many centuries. Today, the castle is one of the main historical sights of the city. Within its walls there is a museum, art gallery and cultural center.

Foundation of the city

The modern history of Wolfsburg begins in 1938. At this time in Germany, it was decided to build a new car factory to produce a “people’s car” – an affordable car for the general population.

At the initiative of the government, a new city for the workers of the enterprise began to be built next to the future plant. It was originally called the “Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben”. The acronym KdF stands for Kraft durch Freude, a government organization dedicated to social programs.

The project of the new city was distinguished by a modern for its time approach to urban planning. Wide streets, residential areas, schools, hospitals, shops, parks and sports facilities were planned. It was supposed to create a convenient city for tens of thousands of workers of the automobile enterprise.

Establishment of Volkswagen

Simultaneously with the construction of the city, a huge automobile plant was built, which later became one of the largest in the world. The main task of the company was the production of a new car designed by engineer Ferdinand Porsche.

It was here that the famous Volkswagen Beetle appeared, which later became one of the most popular cars in the history of the world automotive industry.

World War II

With the outbreak of World War II, the production of civilian cars almost ceased. The plant was reoriented to the production of military equipment, including army cars and components.

During the war, the company used the labor of prisoners of war and forced workers from the occupied countries of Europe. Today in Wolfsburg there are memorial expositions telling about this tragic page of history.

By the end of the war, the plant had been bombarded by aerial bombardments, but its destruction was much less than in many other industrial cities in Germany.

Post-war reconstruction

After the war, Wolfsburg was in the British zone of occupation. It was the British military administration that decided to keep the car factory and resume production of cars.

In 1945, the company officially received the name Volkswagenwerk, and a few years later began mass production model Volkswagen Beetle.

In 1945, the city also received the modern name Wolfsburg, in honor of the ancient castle located here.

Germany’s economic miracle

In the 1950s and 1960s, during the period of the German economic miracle, Wolfsburg developed particularly rapidly. The demand for Volkswagen cars grew rapidly both in Germany and abroad.

Thousands of workers came to the city from different regions of the country, as well as from Italy, Turkey, Spain, Greece and Yugoslavia. New residential areas, schools, hospitals, sports complexes and cultural institutions were built for them.

It was during this period that Wolfsburg became one of the fastest growing cities in West Germany.

Modern Wolfsburg

Today, Wolfsburg remains the world center of the automotive industry. Here are located:

  • the headquarters of the Volkswagen Group;

  • the largest automobile plant of the company;

  • research and engineering centers;

  • testing laboratories;

  • Museums of Automobile History.
