Corfu

Corfu at sunset

Description:

We invite you to get acquainted with the capital of the Ionian Islands, the city of Kerkyra and the Old Ancient City, which is now a suburb of the capital, called Kanoni. It is here that the symbol of the island is located: Pontikonisi (Mouse Island), the temple of the Vlacherna Mother of God and the Monastery of the Virgin Kassiopitra, which attracts every pilgrim with its unusual beauty and warmth.

The main shrine of the monastery is a miracle-working icon depicting the Blessed Virgin, who restored sight to the boy Stefan, unjustly accused and blinded in the 16th century. Since then, the Most Holy Mother of God is prayed for healing from eye diseases, and she also helps from injustice. The monastery is home to Archimandrite Polycarp, a disciple of Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain, who keeps many shrines from all over the world. The museum of antique utensils and a collection of 33 amphibian turtles does not leave indifferent neither children nor adults.

You will have the opportunity to walk through the medieval Old Town of Kerkyra (Corfu Town), which keeps traces of long-gone eras, visit the Church of St. Spyridon, the patron saint of the island, the Cathedral with the relics of the Byzantine Queen Theodora, the memorial of the Russian naval commander Fyodor Ushakov. You will see the Old Fortress, which was built by the Byzantines, the New Venetian Fortress, the famous Spianada Square, the palace of Saints Michael and George, formerly the residence of Greek kings. Walk along Liston Street, identical to Rivoli in Paris, which was built during the French rule in Corfu for the noble inhabitants of the city. In the architecture of Kerkyra, as in the history of the island itself, the elements of different cultures that dominated the island in different years are intricately and harmoniously intertwined.

In the capital, you will have free time to visit numerous souvenir shops, chic jewelry boutiques, where you can shop or drink a cup of fragrant Greek coffee.
