Kerkyra, Corfu, Greece

Description:

In 2006, the authorities of the island of Corfu renamed Boschetto Park located in the center of the city of Kerkyra in honor of famous English writers - Gerald and Lawrence Durrell. They made a huge contribution to the development of the island, glorifying it all over the world. Relatives of the famous brothers attended the opening ceremony, and the residents of the island plan to create a museum of the Durrell family.

Residents of the island of Corfu, as well as numerous fans of the work of Gerald Durrell believe that the publication of his book “My Family and Other Animals” contributed to the increased interest in the island. The book was published in 1956 and sold worldwide in multimillion copies. The author with amazing warmth and humor describes in the book the years spent by his family on the island. The fiftieth anniversary of the publication of the book was timed to the opening of the square in honor of Gerald Durrell and his brother.

No less contribution to the glorification of the island was made by Lawrence Durrell, who wrote in 1945 the book “Prospero Cell”, dedicated to the island of Corfu. It became something between the autobiography of the writer and a detailed guide to the island. By the way, it is in this capacity that the book continues to be reprinted in different languages.
