The Monastery of the Virgin is the largest monastery on the island of Corfu, located in Paleokastritsa. It offers a beautiful view of the sea and nearby islands.
The monastery was founded in 1225 on the site of an old fortress, of which there are no ruins. Most modern buildings belong to the XVII century. The architecture of the monastery attracts its pleasant atmosphere of comfort. Gardens and small courtyards give a feeling of peace.
The interior buildings of the monastery are considered a classic example of monastic architecture of Greece.
At present, the abbot and eight monks live in the monastery. The monastery is open to visitors in the morning. The monks will gladly guide you through their territory. There is also the Icon Museum. Monks produce olive oil and wine that you can buy.
The monastery is not so popular among tourists, so it is not crowded.
