island of Corfu, Greece

Description:

The New Fortress is an impressive bastion in the northeastern part of Corfu, in the Old Town (Corfu Island, Greece). The fortress is located on the hill of St. Mark (Agios Marcos), above the Old Port. The new Fortress served to protect Corfu from the west.

A powerful defensive structure was built over the years, the beginning of construction dates back to 1570-72 years. The decoration of the Central Gate from the sea, built in 1577, was the symbol of the Venetian Republic, during the reign of which the construction of the New Fortress in Corfu took place. The gate features a winged lion, the emblem of St. Mark, and the entire bastion, better known as the New Fortress, is officially called the Fortress of St. Mark.

The New Fortress is a two-level fort. In the lower part, along with ancient structures, the building of the XIX century, still serving as a naval base, has been preserved. The upper part, consisting of two fortifications, is called the “Seven Winds”. Climbing to the fortress, from the observation deck, tourists can enjoy stunning views of the city and the sea, the bell tower of St. Spyridon and the Old Port.
