Lake Halikopulu
Description:
If you go to the southeastern part of the island during your stay in Corfu, not far from the village of Chrisida you will find yourself on the shore of Lake Halicopulu. This salt lake, or lagoon, in the seventeenth century was used as a reservoir for fish breeding. Nowadays, on the shore of the lake is the runway of the International Airport.
The area adjacent to the lagoon of Halicopulu is famous not only for its picturesque views, but also for the fact that since ancient times the ruins of the city have been preserved here, destroyed as a result of numerous invasions of barbarians. In its heyday, this city was the capital of the island of Corfu. From the past, fragments of the ancient tower of the VI century BC and other monuments have been preserved. Among other things, the area of Lake Halicopulu is considered one of the most prestigious on the island, and it is here that the best taverns of the island are located.
