Panaya Spiliotissa Cathedral

Kapodistriou, Kerkira 49100, Greece 35 m

Description:

Panaya Spiliotissa Cathedral is one of the most interesting sights on the Greek island of Corfu. It is dedicated to the Christian saint Blessed Theodora, whose relics are kept in a silver tomb next to the altar of the cathedral. Also in the cathedral are the relics of St. Spyridon (the patron of the city of Kerkyra).

The construction of Panaya Spiliotissa Cathedral began in 1577. In 1841, a large-scale reconstruction was carried out, as a result of which the nave of the cathedral was significantly expanded. After the work, the cathedral became the main one in Kerkyr.

Translated into Russian, the name of the cathedral means “Temple of the Virgin in caves”. In addition to the tombs with the relics of the saints, the cathedral has a large number of magnificent icons.
