Palyani - Gortina - Matala - Monastery of St. Nikolai - Zaros
Description:
A trip to the southern part of Crete begins with a visit to a woman.
The monastery of Palyani, built in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God. South of the monastery is the ancient city of Gortina – the capital of the Roman diocese of Crete, as well as the place of adoption of Christianity in Crete. You will see the birthplace of King Minos. From Gortina, the road leads us to Matala, a picturesque fishing village where you can swim on the beach near the limestone cliffs, which have many caves, including underwater ones. In ancient times, Matala was the ancient port of Gortina. In the village of Zaros, where our next stop is planned, we will visit the only Old Believer monastery of Nicholas the Wonderworker.
After such an active tour, you can relax and enjoy trout dishes, the breeding of which is also famous for this place.
