Rethymno - Gorge Kurtaliotis - Preveli - Arkadi
Description:
Our tour begins with a visit to G. Rethymno, which is very interesting old medieval part of the city. Further, passing the beautiful mountain gorge Kurtaliotis, we arrive at the historic monastery Preveli of the 16th century, erected in honor of St. John the Theologian, where church relics, icons and frescoes are kept. The monastery is located in a picturesque place off the coast of the Libyan Sea, where ascetics lived in the Middle Ages. Driving past one of the oldest olive groves, we get to the plateau in the Ida mountain range, to the monastery of Arcadia. The monastery was the most important center of resistance against the long-standing Turkish occupation and belongs to the most significant attractions of the island. For the people of Crete, this pilgrim’s dwelling is a sacred symbol of their liberation struggle.
