Park Dion
Dion, periphery of Central Macedonia
Description:
Today, Dion is the largest and best preserved archaeological center in Greece. A real open-air museum.
In this place, the ruins of the past coexist harmoniously with wildlife. Among others, the goddess of fertility Demeter was revered here. There's so much growing here that it feels like she's still patronizing the place. Here the Macedonian kings celebrated their victories, held the Olympics and felt the special closeness of their gods.
In Dion Park there is a sacrificial altar of the main of the Greek gods. To offer sacrifice to the Olympic gods as a sign of worship and respect, residents of ancient city-states flocked here. Unfortunately, from the temple of Zeus, only the foundation has survived.
