Journey to Martvili Canyon and Prometheus Cave

Description:

What awaits you

You will find yourself in one of the most beautiful and mysterious places in Western Georgia - Martvili Canyon, where the great king of united Georgia David the Builder spent his childhood. For thousands of years, water has made its way in soft limestone rock to create this natural wonder that will take you to a fairytale world away from civilization. You will swim by boat along steep cliffs, see an underground river, which at the exit of the canyon turns into a waterfall, as well as inspect the fossils preserved in the depths of the canyon.

From a thousand caves of Imereti, Prometheus Cave is the largest and most impressive. Inside, you will be amazed by the forms of stalactites and stalagmites that form frozen stone waterfalls, breathe in the healing air and see underground lakes, on the surface of which sunlight has never hit. And then you can swim out of the cave by boat along the bed of the underground river.

During the trip we will talk about the peculiarities of the Georgian people, family ties and the origin of the Georgian language. You will learn who the cartveli are, hear local legends, touch the heritage of the Colchis culture that inspired the Greeks to create the myth of the Argonauts, and try to guess what was transported in the amphorae found at the bottom of Lake Paliastomi (the Greek word for “old fortress”). I will also tell you about the mythical city of Fasis and take you across the border of East and West, which runs along the Rioni River.

The entrance to the canyon is closed on Mondays.
