Mtskheta: The Heart of Spiritual Georgia
Description:
Until the fifth century, Mtskheta was the capital of the Iberian Kingdom. Today it is rightly called Georgian Jerusalem, because it was here that St. Nino came from Cappadocia and brought Christianity. Here appeared the first Christian church, where Heaton Gospoden is kept, and on the mountain, where Nino erected a cross, today stands the famous monastery of Jvari.
Mtskheta is not just a city, it is a treasure trove of shrines and relics that have attracted pilgrims and travelers from all over the world for centuries.
What awaits you:
The first stop is the Jvari monastery on Mount Armazi. From the observation deck opens a view that is impossible to forget: the confluence of two rivers - Kura and Aragvi, sung by Lermontov in "Mtsyri".
Then we will go to the majestic Svetitskhoveli Cathedral – the first and main temple of Georgia, where the “life-giving pillar” stands to this day. Here are the chapel of the Holy Sepulcher, the burial of King Vakhtang Gorgasali, the Kakhetian king Heraclius II and the princely dynasty of Bagrationi-Mukhransky.
After a walk through the holy places, you can enjoy a glass of wine at a 19th-century winery near Mtskheta (optional, booked in advance).
On the way back we will stop at the grandiose memorial “History of Georgia” – a monumental creation of Zurab Tsereteli, which is called “Georgian Stonehenge”.
This tour will give you a sense of touch with the origins of Georgian history, faith and culture. Mtskheta is a place where every stone building breathes eternity, and landscapes leave a mark on the heart.
Girls should take a headscarf on their heads.
