Museums of Numismatics and Pre-Columbian Gold

Under the Plaza de la Cultura, Central Avenue and 2nd Ave., 5th St

About the company:

Museums of numismatics and pre-Columbian gold united under one roof at once two thematic museums, which are somehow connected with money. The number of exhibits of both constantly increased, as a result of which it was decided to update the expositions and open them to a wide range of viewers. In 2002, a new unified modern museum literally stunned guests with the wealth on display.

First of all, the Museum of Numismatics and Pre-Columbian Gold presents samples of gold objects from the Pre-Columbian era - jewelry, ritual accessories and whole ingots. The exhibits clearly illustrate the era preceding the arrival of the conquistadors. The halls exhibit not only the gold reserves of the country, but also the historical heritage preserved in items made of noble metal. Most art objects of ancient tribes were melted into nondescript ingots during the time of the Conquista. But in the museum you can see miraculously surviving statues of gods made of gold.

The numismatic collection is presented to the public in the main hall and decorated in the form of a gallery. Here you can see the history of the Costa Rican currency, reflected in coins and banknotes.
