St. Florian's Day - Day of Croatian Firefighters

Description:

Saint Florian

May 4 is the Day of the Holy Martyr Florian. Florian was born in Lower Austria around 190. It is believed that he served in the Roman army under the command of the viceroy Aquilinus, who during the persecution of Christians ordered him to drown in the river Ense. Among other things, Florian was engaged in fire extinguishing.

His bones were later transferred to Rome. Pope Lucius III in 1183 allowed the transfer of the remains of St. Florian to Krakow; from this time Florian became the patron of Poland. He is depicted as a warrior pouring flames from a vessel; he is considered to protect from flames and fires. In Croatia, St. Florian is considered the protector of firefighters, and May 4 is Croatian Firefighters Day.
