Saint Lucia Day

Description:

Saint Lucia Day.
The tradition of giving gifts to children in the south of Croatia and the islands traditionally belongs to Saint Lucia on December 13. On this day, a woman, wrapped in a white sheet, goes home, giving children fruits, nuts and sweets. Disobedient children find a rod under the pillow. However, today, the tradition of giving belongs rather to St. Nicholas.

In Konavly (neighborhood of Dubrovnik) there is a proverb translated into Russian as follows: “Saint Lutsa is the giver, twelve days before Christmas”.

The inhabitants of the mountains of Slavonia have a custom of "luce", in which the main words belong to a man dressed as a woman. On the eve of St. Lucia Day, he goes home and asks the girls if they can knit and pray. In an old pot, he wears coals intended for those who cannot.

Some traditions associated with the Day of St. Lucia are also in Great Gorica. This day is also the day of the city.
