History of the city of Karlovac

Founding of the city (1579): Habsburg military project

Karlovac was founded on July 13, 1579 by order of Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg. Its appearance is connected with the urgent need to strengthen the southern borders of the Holy Roman Empire in the face of the continuous pressure of the Ottoman Empire.

Why here?

  • Karlovac is located on a strategic location - at the junction of four rivers: Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra.

  • It is a crossroads between the Slavonic plains, the Adriatic coast and the deep regions of the Balkans.

  • The terrain allowed to control the approaches of the Ottoman troops.

Unique layout

The city was built as an ideal Renaissance fortress in the shape of a six-pointed star surrounded by moats and earthen ramparts. Such a plan was used in Europe in a limited way - Karlovac became one of the best examples of fortifications of the type trace italienne.

The military role of Karlovets in the 16th and 17th centuries

From its foundation until the end of the seventeenth century, Karlovac was:

  • Part of the Croatian Military Border (Vojna Krajina)

  • the most important defensive center against the Ottoman Empire;

  • a place of permanent accommodation of military units, garrison, warehouses and fortifications.

Ottoman raids

During the XVII century, Karlovac withstood several Ottoman sieges, but the fortress city was never taken. Karlovac became a symbol of steadfastness and military discipline.
