Zagreb

Zagreb is a city whose doors are always open to you!

Description:

We begin our walk in Zagreb according to tradition in the main square, which bears the name of the Croatian ban Josip Jelačić, a sword rider, riding a horse into the distance. And the question immediately arises: What does the word “ban” mean and what role has it played in Croatian history?

In many countries, locals arrange meetings with each other in the central square under the clock, and in Zagreb, under the tail of Ban Jelačić’s horse! "Why?" you ask. We will find out during our walk around the city.

We will be able to use Zagreb’s oldest vehicle, a mini-railway that connects the Lower and Upper Towns, with a length of 66 meters and a journey time of only 64! seconds. According to locals, this is the smallest funicular in the world!

In addition to the funicular, in the list of the Croatian “most, most” there is also the world’s smallest city of Hum in Istria and the narrowest street in the world in the town of Vrbnik on the island of Krk. Is that true?

We will pass through the “Green Horseshoe” – parks and squares of the Lower city, which really resembles a horseshoe in shape, and where the Croatian People’s Theater, the Central Botanical Garden, the Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Esplanade Hotel, built for the passengers of the famous “Orient Express”, a train running between Paris and Istanbul, in which, according to the writer Agatha Christie, a terrible crime occurred. In the novel, a train with passengers gets stuck in the snow due to a blizzard. In Croatia, isn't it?

On one of the streets we will see the most beloved writer of the 20th century Maria Zagorka, and near the old city gates the figure of a young girl Dora, the heroine of the work of August Shenoa, who as it came down from the pages of the novel and is waiting for her beloved Paul.

In any city, we are interested in something unique and unique, peculiar only to this place. In Zagreb, it is the Museum of Broken Relationships, Zagreb’s one-of-a-kind and most-visited museum, which is located in the Vere Town, near St. Mark’s Square. The idea of the museum: lovers after parting give the museum objects related to the history of their relationship. In the exposition of the museum there are funny, touching and even tragic stories taken from life.

Walking through the streets and squares of Zagreb, we learn how the branch of the Sava River turned into the Lake Yarun, so beloved by Zagreb residents, why a cannon shoots at noon on the cooler of Lotrščak of the Upper City, and one of the nearby city gates are called “Dverka”, from where the once existing Hungarian name of the main square of the city “Harmica”, we will see a medieval prison for witches and much more.

We can drink coffee on Tkalchicheva Street, which is popular among Zagreb residents, and try the heart-shaped honey gingerbread “Licitarian”, which was once given by young people to beloved girls.

The coat of arms of Zagreb depicts the old city with open gates, which means that Zagreb is always happy for its guests!

Welcome to Zagreb!
