Royal Temple of Taman Ayun

Mengwi, Bali, Indonesia

Description:

The name of the temple Taman Ayun literally means “beautiful garden”. It is deservedly considered one of the most attractive monuments of Bali. Taman Ayun is located in a picturesque park and is surrounded by old trees and ponds.

The construction of Pura Taman Ayun Temple began in 1634 on the initiative of Raja Mengvi. It is sometimes referred to as the family temple, as it honors and worships the deified ancestors of the royal Mengvi dynasty, as well as the central deities of the Balinese religion.

From all sides of the temple wide canals, so you can get into it only through the bridge passing through the ornate gate. Directly from the gate to the courtyard leads a beaten path, which passes through a landscaped park with a square pond, in the center of which a fountain consisting of 9 jets. Four streams of the fountain are located at the cardinal points (North, West, South, East), four more - in the direction of the North-West, North-East, South-West and South-East and one central stream. Such an original location symbolizes Dewa Nawa Sanga - the 9 main gods of the Balinese pantheon.
