Bunderan H.i., Kota Jakarta Pusat 10310, Indonesia
Description:
Selamat Datang was erected in central Jakarta in 1962. Its name in Indonesian means “welcome”. In 1960, President Sukarno proposed a plan to improve Jakarta in preparation for the Fourth Asian Games. It included the construction of a sports complex and several monuments, including Selamat Datang.
The statue was created by Indonesian sculptor Edhi Sunarso. It consists of two bronze statues of a man and a woman, six meters high, who wave their hands to greet the participants of the competition. The woman is pictured with a bouquet of flowers in her left hand. Two figures stand on top of the pedestal, whose height is thirty meters. The Selamat Datang Monument symbolizes the openness of the Indonesian nation, welcoming the participants of the IV Asian Games.
The monument is located in a prestigious area of the city, surrounded by elegant hotels and other tourist and cultural sites. It is installed in the center of a pond with a fountain, 50 meters in diameter.
Selamat Datang has been declared a historical monument in Indonesia. This place is one of the popular places of rest for local residents and guests of the city.
