Fountain of Nymphea

Koraysh, Jordan

Description:

The Nymphey Fountain is a significant historical landmark of Amman. This masterpiece of Roman architectural art was built in 191 AD and dedicated to nymphs. It is located in the city center, a few blocks from the Roman Theatre.

The fountain was a large two-storey complex, lined with marble, with elegant arches and niches, generously decorated with mosaics and stone carvings. Nymphaeus was decorated with statues and lion heads from which water flowed. The underground capacity of the fountain was about 600 square meters.

Excavations began in 1993 and many artifacts of historical value have been transferred to the Amman Archaeological Museum. The state of the fountain is estimated as excellent, so it is planned to return to its former structure and functionality.
