Amman

Roman Square

Al Hashimi, Amman, Jordan

Description:

In ancient times, Roman Square was one of the largest in the Jordanian capital of Amman. Currently, only a number of massive dilapidated columns resemble the glory of those days. The square is located between the Roman Theatre and Hashemi Street. Previously, there was a market where they sold clothes, food and weapons. Currently, in the vicinity of the Roman square is a spacious square, equipped with benches and fountains. It is always lively here, adults often come here to read, play chess, and children - to frolic and play hide and seek among the numerous ruins. From Roman Square there is a magnificent view of the Temple of Hercules.

The main attraction of the square is a number of columns, whose height is about 15 meters. They are located at a distance of 1 meter from each other, many of them are on the brink of destruction.

The local authorities are fighting for the preservation of the cultural heritage, and in 2014 they plan to carry out restoration work to restore the Roman Square.
