Amman

Ammonite Watchtower

Al Shareef Hussein, Jordan

Description:

The Ammonite-built Rujm al Malfuf Watchtower is one of the few monuments of the pre-Hellenistic period. The people have long been gone, even the memories of him erased, and the tower is still standing.

It was built in the VII century BC and was a low circular structure built of rough hewn stone blocks. As for the purpose of Rujm al Malfuf, historians are divided. Some suggest that such a primitive structure sounded an alarm in case of approaching Rabbat Ammon (now Amman) enemy forces, including the Israelis of the pre-Babylonian period. Others believe it had agricultural significance.

Its ruins are in a historic district in the center of Amman. Here, tourists get the opportunity to plunge into the atmosphere of revived antiquity and learn more about the history and traditions of the Jordanian people.
