Castles of the Karanah Desert
Description:
Most likely, Qasr Al Haran was built on the site of an earlier Greek, Roman or Byzantine fortification. Built in the shape of a regular square, it was an ideal place for travelers to spend the night.
Most likely, it was a place where Umayyad rulers could meet with desert Bedouins to negotiate and forge alliances.
The two-storey building accommodated up to 400 people, camels and other animals were driven into the courtyard, the strong door closed tightly at night, and the desert around was perfectly visible through the windows-barrels.
Qasr Al Haran features the use of arches and vaults in each room. All rooms were plastered and decorated with decorative carvings.
