Shobak Castle
Description:
A significant historical landmark of Jordan is Shobak Castle, located south of Amman. It was built in the early twelfth century as one of the links of a large chain of crusader fortresses in Jordan.
The location of the fortress on a high rocky mountain facilitated its defense. Although the castle has not been fully excavated, three of its walls have turned into ruins. During archaeological excavations, the remains of two churches, baths, drain pipes, arches, millstones for pressing olives and other structures were found that have withstood the test of time. In the rock were carved stairs leading to the catacombs dug under one of the churches. There are also unique cave paintings depicting animals and episodes of the Crusades.
Shobak Castle is a unique monument that is popular among travelers.
