Monument to the Duke of Wellington

Phoenix Park, Parkgate St, Dublin, Co. Dublin, Ireland

Description:

The Monument to the Duke of Wellington is a majestic obelisk erected in 1861 that is considered the largest obelisk in Europe. It is located in Dublin and is located at the east entrance to Park Phoenix.

Walking down the street, near the east park gate, you will see a 63-meter obelisk, which is simply impossible not to notice. This monument is dedicated to Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington.

The obelisk, which was laid in 1817, was designed by architect Sir Robert Smirk. Construction took a long time due to lack of financial resources. For the same reason, the design of the Wellington statue on horses was canceled and a more concise version of the monument was adopted.
