Liffey Bridge

15 Bachelors Walk, Dublin 1, Co. Dublin, Ireland

Description:

The Liffey Bridge, built in 1816, is Dublin’s oldest pedestrian bridge. It connects the embankments of Ormond Quay Lower and Wellington Quay.

Once this bridge bore the name of Wellington, but was later renamed after the name of the river over which it was thrown. Before the bridge was built, seven ferries operated by William Walsh ran across the river. But because they were in poor condition, he was asked to repair them or build a bridge.

The bridge is a white arched bridge of cast iron construction. Its height is three and a half meters above water level, and its length is almost five hundred meters. The bridge also has a second unofficial name, which is common among locals and tourists - Polpenny, because in the early years of its existence, the passage on the bridge was paid and cost one way half a penny.
