Dublin

St. Patrick's Cathedral

Ireland, Dublin, Saint Patrick's Close

Description:

One of the most magnificent cathedrals in the world is located in Dublin – St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

It was built in the 5th century – exactly in the place where Patrick baptized the Irish. In the 12th century, a stone church was built here.

In the early 13th century, by order of the English King Henry II, the reconstruction of the building began, as a result of which the cathedral acquired the style of English Gothic. Later, there were additions: the Minot Tower, the Lady Chapel, the west nave. The latest updates of the cathedral include the spire, which was decorated with the church in the 18th century.

Serious restoration work in the temple was carried out in the middle of the 19th century – their initiator and main sponsor was the famous brewer Benjamin Guinness. In 1871, the temple received the status of a national cathedral.

The magnificent hall of the cathedral is striking, the windows of which are decorated with amazing stained glass windows, and the floor is lined with mosaics.

On the territory of the temple you can see the flowerbed, broken on the site of the well, from which Patrick drew water for the Christian rite.

St. Patrick's Cathedral is not a bishop's pulpit, it is headed by its dean. One of the most famous deans rests in the temple building - the world-famous writer and pamphletist Jonathan Swift.
