Antequera

Antequera: megaliths, stone labyrinths and wildlife

Description:

Antequera is one of the most unusual corners of Andalusia. Here in one route converge prehistoric monuments, the harsh beauty of the karst mountains and quiet, almost provincial Spain, not adjusted for mass tourism. This trip is suitable for those who want to see Andalusia in all its layers - from ancient civilizations to pristine nature.

The journey begins with an acquaintance with the historical Antequera. We will walk through the old center, climb to the observation deck near the cathedral, which overlooks the famous mountain “Indian Head” – a natural symbol of the city, surrounded by legends. Along the way, we will see ancient churches, a fortress and cozy squares that preserve the atmosphere of a leisurely Andalusian city.

Further, the route leads to the Antequera Dolmens - one of the most important prehistoric complexes in Europe, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. These megaliths, created thousands of years ago, still raise questions about the knowledge, technology and ideas of ancient people about the world. Here it becomes clear why Anteker is often called the mystical center of Andalusia.

After a busy first part, we will pause for lunch in an authentic restaurant-museum, decorated in the style of an ancient Andalusian manor. This is not just a lunch, but an opportunity to get acquainted with the local cuisine and traditional life of the region.

Then we will visit Lobo Park – one of the few places in Europe where you can watch wolves in conditions that are as close to natural. Here we learn about the behavior of predators, their social structure and role in nature. Sometimes you can hear the famous howl of a wolf – a rare and powerful moment of the trip.

The final point will be El Torkal – a natural park with fantastic karst landscapes. Wind and water for millions of years created stone forms resembling labyrinths, mushrooms and sculptures. Walking along the trails of El Torkal allows you to feel the scale of nature and see Andalusia from a completely unexpected side.
