Granada - Spain

Description:

Granada is a city in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. It is known for fine examples of medieval architecture that date back to the Moorish period. One of them is the Alhambra, a huge hilltop fortress that houses the royal palaces of the Nasrid dynasty, quiet courtyards, mirror ponds, fountains and orchards of the Generalife.

In 1238, Muhammad ibn Al Ahmar of the Nasrid family led a rebellion against the ruling Almohad dynasty. With the support of the people of Granada, he founded the Emirate of Granada, which stretched from the Pillars of Hercules to Almeria along the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It was this period of his reign that went down in history as the heyday of the emirate.

The Spanish Reconquista continued to conquer the southern territories. However, due to the geographical location of Granada, making it difficult to access, and the policies of its rulers, the emirate lasted until the end of the fifteenth century. Since the fall of the city under the onslaught of the Spanish conquerors on January 2, 1492, Arab domination of the southern lands of Spain came to an end.

Granada is located in an amazing area, at the foot of the northeastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. It stands on three hills, according to legend, these hills, in appearance resembling an open grenade, gave the city its name - Granada.
Only in this city amazingly harmoniously combined landscapes, buildings of ancient architecture and white quarters of new buildings. Granada is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. With regard to architectural monuments, it will be interesting to visit the fortress of the Alhambra (“Red Fortress”) – the only monument of the Moors, preserved, located on a steep ridge behind a wooded hill.
Near the Alhambra is the old summer palace of the sultans with many pools, fountains and a beautiful garden Generalife. Close to the Cathedral built the Royal Chapel, it contains the tombs of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon.
