Хихон

Gihon - an important city of Asturias

Description:

Gihon is a rare combination of fishing traditions and the dynamics of the modern port city. It has everything: a beautiful bay with sandy beaches, unique historical monuments, and rich traditional cuisine.

If you do not mind, walk the picturesque embankment, admire the seascapes, learn about the life and history of Asturias, then I suggest getting acquainted with this city.

At the beginning of the tour we will visit the park of Santa Catalina, which is located on the site of a former military bastion. You will see the symbol of the modern city – the sculpture of Eduardo Chillida “Praise the Horizon”. This concrete structure cuts through the space and divides the sea and the sky in a flat line. From here opens an amazing panorama of the coast and the vast expanses of the Atlantic Ocean.

About the Roman era in the history of the city you will learn from the terms built in the I-III centuries.

In the historic quarter of Simadevilla you will see how ordinary fishing families live.

We will pass to Marquis Square, where a monument to the first Asturian king Pelayo is erected. I will tell you about the Reconquista and the role of the inhabitants of Asturias in the liberation of Christian lands from the Moors.

We will stop at the Revillahihedo Palace, built in the XVIII century, see the restored Romanesque Church of St. Peter. On the square of Hovelyanos we can visit the Art Museum, which is located in the house of the XV century.

We will stop at the former Augustinian monastery, see the Clock Tower, built on the ruins of the XVI century. The remnants of the 850-meter-long fortress wall surrounding the old town are a reminder of the city’s important defensive role.

Visit the central square where the city hall is located. Here you will see a lot of restaurants-sidreria, where according to the old tradition, locals drink cider from one glass, passing it to each other.

Pass narrow central streets with buildings of the late XIX-early XX century. We will go to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was built at the beginning of the XX century by the disciple of A. Gaudí Joan Rubio.

I recommend you to also visit the ethnographic museum of Asturias, where the open-air park contains many architectural structures of different eras.

You will be surprised by its grandeur working university, built for the children of miners. This largest complex of educational buildings is located 3 kilometers from the city. Here you can climb the highest tower in Asturias and take survey photos.

You will be interested in visiting the cider museum. From January to October, it hosts tastings of this apple drink. Not only do you know the benefits of cider, but you also learn how to drink it properly.

Gihon is a large gastronomic area. Local cuisine will be remembered by you with an abundance of seafood, dishes from vegetables and meat, delicate cheeses with mold. I will tell you about recipes for cooking fabada, a popular dish of beans.

In every corner of the city you will experience positive energy. Gihon will undoubtedly be your favorite place to relax.
