Madrid

Toledo is a city of three cultures

Description:

Toledo will surprise you with the ancient atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The first capital of Spain is 80 km from Madrid. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The greatest imperial city of Spain was founded by the Romans, developed already in the time of the Moors and experienced significant reconstruction after the Reconquista, an open-air city-museum. Toledo was the capital of the Visigoths, under the Moors – a flourishing trading city where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side. But centuries after the Reconquista of the eleventh century, in 1492 there was a decline associated with the expulsion of Jews and Muslims. Toledo is a labyrinth of narrow streets with many churches, monasteries, museums. But the main thing that tourists want to see is the Cathedral, the construction of which began in 1226, one of the richest in Europe! Why? Every corner of the temple deserves close attention. After all, there are magnificent wrought-iron grilles, and an unusual altar, beautiful choirs, coffered ceilings, paintings by El Greco, Titian, Raphael, Caravaggio, vestments of cardinals, organs of different eras, clocks, frescoes, ancient books, crucifixes. And, of course, the gift-guard: the magnificent creation of Enrique de Arfe in 1524, the most beautiful in Spain. Not far from the Alcázar is the Museum of Santa Cruz, in the building of the former hospital and shelter of the XVI century, now it is a museum of art and archaeology. Here you will see paintings by El Greco, Flemish tapestries, sculptures, decorative arts. There are mosques and synagogues in the city. In one of the synagogues, del Transito, you can visit an exhibition dedicated to the Sephardim, as Spanish Jews called themselves. Nearby is the house-museum of the great El Greco with a cozy courtyard inside. In the Church of St. Thomas is stored, probably, the main canvas of this artist – “The Burial of the Count de Orgas”. The monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, built in the style of flaming Gothic in the XV century, was erected by decree of Catholic kings. The city is surrounded on three sides by the Tahoe River. And you can admire the old bridges, and if you want - and walk on them. Toledo found fame in the production of swords in the style of damaskino and other steel products, which you can buy as a souvenir in one of the many souvenir shops. Do not forget about marzipans, because this is where these sweets are especially tasty. You can also choose handmade ceramic products.
