Church of San Isidro
Calle de Toledo, 37, 28005 Madrid, Españ a
Description:
The church of San Ysidro was built from 1622 to 1664. It was commissioned by the Jesuit Order (another name for this order is the Society of Jesus). The temple was named after the Christian saint Isidore the Peasant, who became famous for the numerous miracles he created during his lifetime (his relics are kept in the church to this day). The church was consecrated thirteen years before its completion. Less than a hundred years later, as the Jesuit order was expelled from Spain, and King Charles III ordered the architect Ventura Rodriguez new interior of the church.
During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the church of San Ysidro was badly damaged by fire - many works of art disappeared in the fire. Restoration works were able to restore only a small part of the former beauty.
