Church of St. Jerome

28014, Madrid, Spain

Description:

The Church of St. Jerome is located on a hill behind the main building of the Prado Museum in Madrid. It was built in 1505 and served as the main temple of the monastery of the Order of St. Jerome, which was founded here in the middle of the XV century. The history of the monastery is directly connected with the royal dynasty of Spain. From the seventeenth century, when the beautiful royal palace of Buen Retiro was built near it, and until 1993, when the cathedral of Almudena was consecrated, the Church of St. Jerome was the main venue for various royal events: weddings, coronations and funerals. The last in this church was crowned Juan Carlos I, the current King of Spain, in 1975.

Currently, the monastery attracts many tourists and pilgrims who want to enjoy the magnificent appearance of the building, made in the classical Gothic style, as well as take part in divine services. After visiting the Cathedral, you will be able to see such nearby attractions as the monument to Maria Cristina of Bourbon, Canovas del Castillo Square and the Thyssen-Bornemissa Museum.
