Santa Cruz Palace

Calle de Atocha 6, 28012, Madrid, Españ a

Description:

The Palace of Santa Cruz, built between 1620 and 1640, is a Baroque architectural gem from the Habsburg era.

The palace received its name only in 1767 because of the church of the same name located next to it. It was designed by architect Juan Gomez Mora. Despite the fact that the palace underwent reconstruction, it retained its original appearance.

Its brick facade is made with white-stone pylons. Also, its central portal was created from white stone, decorated on the sides with towers with capitals. Originally there was a court and a city prison, where famous criminals such as the poet Lope de Vega, the writer George Barrow and many others were detained. It currently houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
