Monument to Miguel de Cervantes
Plaza de Españ a, 28008 Madrid, Comunidad de Madrid, Spain
Description:
The monument to Miguel de Cervantes, located in the Plaza de España near the Royal Palace in Madrid, was opened in 1929.
The monument was planned to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Cervantes’ death in 1917, but work on the monument was long delayed.
The monument is a figure of Cervantes sitting at the base of the stele and two bronze statues of his most famous characters: Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, who sit, respectively, on an old knave and a knave. The top of the stele is crowned by a globe with 5 continents, as an allegory of the spread of the Spanish language around the world. Also visible in the complex are statues of Reality and Fiction, as well as a statue of Queen Isabella of Portugal and a fountain with coats of arms of countries using the language of Cervantes. Another monument is adjoined by an Indian, the figure of Dulcinea and the group “Rinconete and Cortadillo”.
