Oriente Square

Plaza de Oriente, 2, 28013 Madrid, Spain

Description:

The eastern square (Plaza de Oriente) began to be built in the XIX century during the reign of Joseph I Bonaparte on the site of demolished buildings and was completed in the era of Isabella II.

In the center of the square stands an equestrian statue of King Philip IV, cast in bronze by the Italian master Pietro Tacca. The most famous building on the square is the Opera House, built in 1850 by Antonio López Aguado. On the southwestern side, the square overlooks the Amulden Cathedral, restored and consecrated by the Pope.

The square is well landscaped. From the north and south it is bordered by two large squares, in which there are limestone sculptures of the first Spanish kings.

The square can be reached by metro to Opera Station or by bus number 25 and 39 to San Quintin stop.
