The triumphal arch-gate of Puerta de Alcala
Plaza de la Independencia, 1, 28014 Madrid, Spain
Description:
The Alcalá Gate, known as the Arc de Triomphe de Puerta de Alcalá, has long been one of Madrid’s most recognizable landmarks, its peculiar symbol, the “logo”. They are located on Independence Square, in the center of the capital.
The authorship of the monument belongs to the Italian architect Francesco Sabatini, whom King Carlos III entrusted with the construction. In addition to the gate of Alcalá, Sabatini is the author of such objects as the Royal Customs, the arms factory in Toledo, the Royal Palace in Madrid, but it was the gate of Alcalá that brought the architect fame.
Construction of the structure lasted more than 10 years.
The gate is a monumental granite structure erected in the neoclassical style. Three large vaulted passages are decorated with massive lion heads and intersecting pairs of horns of abundance. On the side arches of the gate there are four sculptures, symbolizing the four virtues: Wisdom, Moderation, Justice and Courage.
The gate of Alcalá is one of the most beautiful sights and declared a national monument of Spain.
