Alcala Street
Description:
Being in Madrid, you need to walk along Alcala Street. This is a street of beautiful architectural monuments.
The current name appeared at the end of the XVI century. And in the XV century, this place was a country road that led from the Puerta del Sol square in the center of old Madrid to the city of Alcala de Anares. The second name of this road was “Olive Road” because it ran through olive groves.
On this site in 1778, King Carlos III built the Arc de Triomphe "Puerta de Alcala", which became one of the most famous and visited attractions of Madrid. Nowadays, Alcala Street is also called the street of big banks, or the Spanish Wall Street. Here is the Bank of Spain building, built in 1884-1891. The interior of the building is striking in its pomp, and there is also a museum, which by prior arrangement can be visited.
