Gran Via Street

Calle Gran V a, Madrid, Spain

Description:

There is no official street in Madrid. But if you think about it, Gran Via is quite worthy of this title. Its name translates from Spanish as “big road”. This is a picturesque street, on both sides of which there are numerous theaters, hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants.

The original design of this street dates back to 1862. According to the plan of the architects, the new street was to connect the street of Alcala with the Plaza de Espagna. During a certain period, the construction of a new street was one of the central themes of the Spanish capital. The construction of Gran Via was carried out in three stages and was completed only in 1950. The result was a picturesque street with its very special face, with a large number of original buildings built in various modern architectural styles, the facades of which were unique and did not repeat each other.

Originally, each section of Gran Via had its own name, but these are no longer used. Gran Via ends with one of the main squares of Madrid - the famous Plaza de España.
