The Royal Trail - Spain

The Royal Trail is a walking path, almost 4 kilometers long and only one meter wide, built literally on the walls of the Gaitanes Gorge in El Chorro, in the province of Malaga. The trail is laid in steep cliffs at an altitude of one hundred meters above the Guadalorcé River.
This dizzying route was officially closed after the deaths of four tourists in 1999-2000. Since then, the condition of the trail has deteriorated and, theoretically, it is impossible to walk along it. However, neither banning posters nor fines can deter many fans of extreme tourism.
The Provincial Council of Malaga began rebuilding the road in March this year and the Royal Trail will reopen in early 2015. It was stated that it would be free of charge for the first three months.
The royal trail ends in the small village of El Chorro (near Alora), which is also one of the main climbing points in Europe. The most impressive site is the entrance to the Gaitanes Gorge.
Restoration work affected all four kilometers of the road, in particular, a 1.2-kilometer pedestrian bridge hanging among almost vertical walls, which required the help of special climbers and helicopters. The bridge was built in the early twentieth century by the El Chorro Hydroelectric Society for the maintenance of the Gaitanejo and Chorro dams. The name of the trail is due to the fact that in May 1921 King Alfonso XIII passed through these places, heading for the opening of the Condé Dam on the Guadalorese River.
A few years ago, a video appeared on YouTube in which the Royal Trail was described as the most dangerous pedestrian path in the world. The video has now been viewed by more than eleven million people.
One of the stages of the Vuelta España 2015 bicycle tour will connect the Alaurine de la Torre with the Royal Trail, which is designed to emphasize the special importance for Malaga of this tourist project. By the way, this is the path that Antonio Banderas chose to introduce his new lover, Nicole Kidman, to Spain.
