Nerja + Frigiliana - Spain

Description:

But the Costa del Sol hides even more beautiful places and cities from commercial tourism, and Nerja is one of them.

After the Christian conquest, Nerja suffered several attacks by Muslim pirates who tried to plunder the city. People lived in fear and some even left the city forever. The situation was so desperate that the government legally required every citizen to carry a weapon to repel attacks. The Balcony de Europe used to be occupied by a watchtower (now destroyed), and cannons were placed here to deter Muslims.

In 1885, a terrible earthquake destroyed a large number of buildings and caused numerous casualties. King Alfonso XII visited the city and gave it the name Balcon de Europe, as Europe ended here and one could even see Africa on clear days. Nerja - this town is famous for its caves, they stretch for almost 5 km. The caves are the main tourist attraction. There are not only excursions to the halls and galleries, but also musical concerts, because one of the chambers of the cave forms a natural amphitheater with excellent acoustics. To the surprise of speleologists, archaeologists and the entire scientific community, many remains of animals, household items of ancient people and human burials have been preserved in the cave. The cave was used as a shelter for the entire settlement. Moreover, rituals of sacrifice and direct burial of people in distant caves were carried out here. All episodes from the life of ancient people depicted on the walls, so now we can trace the details of hunting and life of the settlement.
