Palace of the House of Pilate in Seville
Description:
We are always attracted not only by the royal residences, but also by the houses where real families lived. I want to look behind closed doors, see their rooms, gardens, habits and understand what the world was like for people with power, wealth and delicate taste.
The House of Pilate for centuries belonged to one of the most influential aristocratic families of Andalusia, and today is associated with the ducal house of Medinaceli. This is not just a museum interior, but a real family palace, which still retains the feeling of a private home.
Its construction began at the end of the fifteenth century. Each generation of owners added something different, so the palace turned into an amazing dialogue of eras.
The heart of the house is the main patio. It combines Gothic, Mudejar, Renaissance and Romanticism. Marble columns coexist with carved stucco, antique busts with bright asulejos, and Italian harmony with Andalusian love of water, shade and coolness.
In the beauty of wooden ceilings, doors, galleries and ceramics, the House of Pilate can rival the royal Alcazar. Moreover, its interiors became a model for many palaces of Andalusian Aristocratia.
But this house has not only history, but also secrets.
Behind a small bar you can see the image of a rooster. Folk legend claims that there was once kept the ashes of the same rooster who sang after the apostle Peter’s three-fold abdication of Christ.
Could this legend be true? Is it related to the name of the House of Pilate?
During the tour, we will understand where this name actually came from, who lived in the palace, why it was rebuilt and how historical events changed its appearance.
And most importantly, let’s try to feel the private, aristocratic Seville: the city of not only cathedrals and kings, but also the families that have created its beauty for centuries.
