Excursion "Osuna As It Is"

Description:

Have you been to Osuna yet? Lost a lot! Never heard of it.

About her?

Then listen...

Osuna has been standing on this land for 3000 years - since the time of the ancient Iberians (Turdetan tribe). From that era, several bas-reliefs have been preserved: “Soldier” and “Osuna Bulls”, etc.

The city was later ruled by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians.

Under the Romans, this city was originally called Urso. The city got its name from the fact that in this wooded area, in those days, there were many bears.

During the First Triumvirate, the city sided with Gnaeus Pompey Magna in his opposition to Julius Caesar and was Pompey's last stronghold on the Iberian Peninsula. Julius Caesar placed a special legion in the city, the Regio Ursuario, and gave the city the title of Nutriceu Civitas Inmune. The city had the right to coin its own coin. Marcus Antonio, during the Second Triumvirate, settled the city with legionnaire veterans, and Ursa received a new status of a Roman colony, and a new name - Colonia Genetiva Julia. Pliny the Elder century later referred to the city as Colonia Genetiva Urbanorum Urso.

From the Roman period remained significant monuments of antiquity – necropolis and quarries (these quarries existed in the city in the time of the Iberians).

Under the Muslims, from the eighth century, the city became known as Oxon (from another transcription - Oson) and was conquered from the Arabs by the troops of Fernando the Third Saint in 1239-1240-ies. In 1264, the city was given to the knightly Order of Calatrava.

And in 1445-1464 the city became the capital of the county of Uren, and under King Felipe II (1556-1598) Osuna was already the capital of the duchy (1562). It was at this time that the famous Kolegiata, the University, many beautiful churches were built in Osun.

And all this rich architectural heritage has been safely preserved to this day. Osuna escaped the fate of many Spanish cities, which turned into industrial centers in the 30-40s of the 19th century, on the wave of the Industrial Revolution. In Osun, factories were not built and it remained a quiet provincial town, around which the fields of the surrounding farmers spread.

And you can talk about Osuna in another way.

Osuna was founded, according to legend, in the 137th year after the Flood, by the decision of the granddaughter of King Hispano.

And here, after we started talking about legends, it is time to say that in Osun there are mysterious ancient buildings. They do not know their origin; neither did they build them, nor when, nor their purpose.

So let’s look at them together and think about what they are.
