Torre del Oro Tower of Mauritania

Torre del Oro 41001, Seville, Spain

Description:

The Torre del Oro, or Golden Tower, is located in Seville, Spain, on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. This unique structure of the 13th century, made in the form of a duodenum, was intended to protect the harbor of the city. The Golden Tower is part of the fortified walls of ancient Seville that have not survived to this day. The origin of its name is unknown.

During the centuries of its existence, the Moorish tower was used in various ways: as a chapel, a prison, a repository of treasures of King Pedro the Cruel, a port warehouse. Torre del Oro is now owned by the City Council.

Today there is an exposition of the Maritime Museum.
