Santo Tome Chapel
Calle de Santo Tom, 45002 Toledo, Spain
Description:
The chapel of São Tomé in the Spanish city of Toledo would hardly be of interest to tourists if its walls did not hide the real treasure. This treasure is the famous canvas “The Burial of the Count de Orgas”, written in 1586 by the brilliant artist El Greco. At the sight of this canvas, the famous artist of the last century Salvador Dali fainted.
El Greco painted his painting for two years, and in fact gave it to the city for a pittance - the reward received hardly covered half of the money spent on paints and brushes. The canvas is so huge that if one day it is necessary to remove it from the chapel of São Tomé, you will have to break the walls. By the way, the most observant will definitely see the self-portrait of El Greco - he portrayed himself as a knight looking directly at the viewer.
