Alcazar Fortress

Cuesta Carlos V, 2

Description:

The Alcazar fortress is a castle in the strict Herreriano style, built on the site of successive Roman, Visigothic and Arab fortresses. The palace was transformed several times by the Spanish kings Alfonso VI, Alfonso X, Charles V, and Philip II. During the reign of Charles V, the castle was built as a royal residence. However, the capital was moved to Madrid, and the palace failed to fulfill its original purpose. The late Renaissance castle was used as a residence for widow queens removed from the capital.

Since the end of the XIX century, the building housed the infantry academy, whose unsuccessful siege by Republican troops in 1936 turned the Alcázar into a symbol of Spanish nationalism. The palace building has become one of the most revered sights of the city of Toledo.

Currently, in the castle, which has absorbed the imprints of different architectural styles, there is a military museum and library of Castile - La Manci.
