Bridge to the Cathedral

Puente de San Mart & Iacute n, 45004 Toledo, Spain

Description:

You can approach Toledo Cathedral from different sides, but tourists are usually guided along the famous stone bridge of St. Martin. It was built in the XIV century by order of Charles II. The Gothic bridge over the Tagus River consists of five arched spans and is reinforced on both sides by two hexagonal towers. It offers a magnificent view of the historical part of the city.

Near the water itself are the remains of several baths built by the Moors in the 14th century. They were destroyed by the Spanish during the Reconquest. St. Martin’s Bridge was also damaged during the war between Pedro I the Cruel and his half-brother Enrique. The central span was restored and has reached our days in this form. On one of the towers-gate preserved granite bas-relief with the coat of arms of the city and a small statue of Archbishop St. Julian.
