Bisagra's New Gate

Calle de Real del Arrabal, 14, 45003 Toledo, Spain

Description:

The new gate of Bisagra is the most famous in the fortress of Toledo. Their modern appearance was found in the middle of the 16th century. The gate is a kind of citadel, of the four walls of which two are the external and internal gates themselves.

Fortified towers of cylindrical shape, located on the outer part of the gate and decorating the central facade, were built by the Arabs. In the center, above the entrance arch, is carved a huge granite coat of arms in the form of a double-headed eagle of the era of Emperor Charles the Fifth. There are also two towers on the inside of the gate. Square, with pyramidal tiled roofs, the buildings are connected by the coat of arms of the city - the Habsburg double-headed eagle. All this powerful majestic structure is crowned with a statue of the Guardian Angel of Toledo.
