Gate of the Sun Puerta del Sol
Callejó n de San Jos, 45003 Toledo, Españ a
Description:
The Puerta del Sol Gate, or the Gate of the Sun, is located near the Gate of Bisagra, in Toledo. They were built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 14th century. The structure consists of two well-fortified jagged towers of round and square shape with the main arch in the center. The Arabs who once dominated here resemble a pointed gate vault with elegant brickwork.
Above the arched opening is a triangular marble relief depicting a scene from the life of St. Idelphonso with the sun and moon on a red background. Above, on the arcature, there is a small sculptural composition on which the figures of two women hold a tray with a human head. It is believed that it depicts young women in the city, raped by the ruler of Toledo, who for his crime was executed by the king. And on the city gate, the sculpture was installed as a warning.
