San Servando Castle

Toledo, Spain

Description:

San Servando is a castle that for centuries was a Roman fortress, then a church of the Latins (Vestgoths) and an Arab bastion.

The castle has a thousand-year history and is located in Toledo, on the east of the Tagus River, almost opposite the Alcázar. The location of the fortress on the hill and by the river was an important strategic decision: in the Middle Ages, the road to Tahoe was controlled from San Servando, as well as the descent to the Alcantara Bridge. After the 14th century, the castle gradually collapsed, and the wall near the river completely collapsed.

In the XIX century, a powder cellar was placed in the fortress. In 1873, the cellar was sold, and a year later, due to the danger of its destruction, the castle was declared a historical and cultural structure. After reconstruction, the fortress was a college, and now the castle is a hotel for young people, there are also conferences and various courses.
